On October 3, 2002, Dracula:  A Chamber Musical opened for its American Premiere; a three week run at the North Shore Music Theatre in Beverly, Massachusetts.

It is interesting to note that the script continued to evolve as the cast rehearsed for their premiere.  Act II underwent some substantial changes.  The original opening number in Act  II, "Live to Walk Away", a confrontational duet between Dracula and Van Helsing, was cut.   Though the song was cut, some of the dialog from the scene was kept for a confrontation between the two that occurred much later in the act.   Instead, Act II began with "No Greater Force", Mina's powerful pledge of love to Jonathan.   This song was an important lead in to Dracula's seduction of Mina and another script change.  As originally written, Dracula offered Mina the promise of eternal life and a love that would last beyond death, just as he had promised with Lucy.  With the change, Dracula sought to convince Mina that she could save his immortal soul if only she would love him; playing on her strong belief in the power of love.  This change was very effective and made Dracula much more than a one-trick pony;  one who could change to be what his victim would most desire.  This theme of the power of love would then come full circle, for it was the strength of Jonathan's love that ultimately saved her.

The physical production was striking with gorgeous costumes and inventive sets and staging, like the mechanical horse and carriage used for Harker's ride to the castle or the turntable that made it appear that Dracula was floating or the Demon Bride who slithered down the bed post from her hiding place in the canopy of the bed or Mina sucking blood from Dracula' s chest.  These are just some of the many moments that worked to make this an audience pleaser.
